Tonya Hongsermeier, MD, MBA
Vice President and Chief Clinical Innovation Officer
Elimu Informatics
Dr. Hongsermeier is the VP and chief clinical innovation officer for Elimu Informatics, a company that specializes in interoperability, data quality and clinical decision support tools and services.
She has held prior senior leadership roles in informatics at Beth Israel Lahey Health, Partners Healthcare, Cerner and InterQual. She studied medicine at Boston University and trained in internal medicine at the New England Deaconess Hospital. During medical practice, she became troubled that “managed care” was more focused on using technology to manage money rather than improving care. Her journey to solve this dilemma led her to focus on how information technology can be designed, deployed and adopted as a backbone for a learning, patient-centered, digital healthcare system. As CMIO at Lahey Health, she supported the migration of six hospitals and 300 outpatient departments to an integrated EHR platform ultimately achieving system-wide HIMSS EMRAM Stage 7. While at Partners, she led the development of a renowned clinical decision support and knowledge management team within the clinical informatics research and development group and implemented a variety of leading-edge tools and governance structures to improve the embedding of clinician-friendly clinical decision support into electronic health records. Her team implemented a collaboration and content management platform well before the emergence of tools like Google Workspace and Microsoft Teams. She also served as a team lead on the government-funded Clinical Decision Support Consortium, Advancing Clinical Decision Support research project and Health eDecisions Initiative which led to the development of a standard digital model for reporting quality measures. She also served as the inaugural co-chair for the Semantic Web Healthcare-Life Sciences Special Interest Group for the World Wide Web Consortium under Sir Tim Berners-Lee.
In 2016, she was honored to become an inaugural member of the Carol Emmott Fellowship, a cutting-edge program that accelerates the leadership capacity and impact of women leaders in health care. In 2020, she was presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award for the Health Sector program at the Questrom School of Business, Boston University. Her focus remains on ensuring that our caregivers and patients have access to the best solutions possible for achieving a healing connection and wellness.
